Dr. Phillips Charities Celebrates 150th Birthday of Dr. P. Phillips with $1.5 Million in Grants to Local Community
ORLANDO, Fla. – [October 18, 2024] – Last night, in recognition of Dr. P. Phillips’ 150th birthday, Dr. Phillips Charities hosted a private reception and concert for nonprofits, local leaders, and first responders, awarding $1.5 million in grants to local nonprofit organizations in Orange and Osceola counties. The evening was capped off by a performance from Grammy award winning artist, Rob Thomas.
“It was a special night to honor the immense legacy of Dr. Phillips and his lasting impact on our community, said Ken Robinson, President & CEO of Dr. Phillips Charities. “Doc & Della were pioneers and philanthropists, who cared deeply about providing support in the areas of health, education, arts & culture, children & youth and social services. Doc’s passion for ‘helping others help themselves’ lives on today across Central Florida and this event was a wonderful tribute to that heritage.”
The Board of Directors of Dr. Phillips Charities also announced the 2024 recipients of the Dr. Phillips Leadership Award including 4Roots, Junior Achievement, Grace Medical Home, Lift Orlando, and United Arts of Central Florida. In the innovative and philanthropic tradition of their founders, Dr. P. Phillips, his wife Della, and their son Howard, the Dr. Phillips Leadership Award, which includes a $150,000 contribution to each recipient, honors nonprofit organizations that demonstrate community leadership, financial stewardship, and sustainable and impactful programs that change lives.
“Tonight, we celebrated the 150th birthday of Dr. Phillips, a courageous man, who was not afraid to do things that had not been done before,” said Terry Prather, Chairman, Dr. Phillips Charites. “The recipients of our Leadership Award were selected this year for carrying on the legacy of Dr. Phillips by making a lasting difference in the lives of Central Floridians.”
During the night, over 40 nonprofits received grants, including 30 microgrants of $5,000 each to young organizations making an impact across the community, and 10 grants of $15,000 voted on by the audience in attendance.
Also honored were two Orlando Police Officers, Kaley Shaouni and Andy Rodriguez, as “First Responders of the Year” by the Committee of 100. Founded by Howard Phillips and other Central Florida business leaders of their time, the committee has maintained, as its sole purpose, the goal to financially and emotionally assist families of first responders in Orange County, Florida who have lost their life in the line of service.
