The gift was formalized in an agreement that passed the City Council unanimously today. Dr. Phillips will also invest $12-14 million for transportation and infrastructure improvements in the area including collaborating with the city to upgrade the current storm water system, improving water quality to the Lake Lawne/Wekiva Basin.

Park Preview IllustrationAfter two years of planning and community input, Dr. Phillips recently announced its plans for The Packing District, a 202- acre project focused on adaptive reuse and centered at the intersection of Princeton and Orange Blossom Trail preserving and recapturing a defining part of our community’s history while providing a vibrant base of living and commerce. Historic buildings will be repurposed, integrated with new uses, and connected to dedicated public spaces by a new and bold plan for urban trails and the new 100-acre public park. The project will start construction in 2018 and will continue to mature over the next 10-15 years creating 800 jobs and an estimated $56 million economic impact to the city’s general operating budget.

“Dr. Phillips’ legacy as a responsible community builder has always been rooted in his early vision to plan today what will make our community prosper tomorrow. The Packing District and the new regional park have the unique potential to preserve our history while transforming an area to meet the needs of today and future generations,” said Ken Robinson, president & CEO of Dr. Phillips Charities.

Park Overview Illustration“The unique prospect of connecting The Packing District with a large urban park presented us with a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with the city to establish a regional park just a few miles from the downtown urban core and a natural destination to relocate the historic tennis center. At the same time, the community told us they wanted more active uses including biking, walking, and running trails. This park will become a destination providing those active uses and even serving as a catalyst for western expansion of urban trail,” he continued.

Dr. Phillips would like to thank SC Advisors as the District’s development advisor and the team of Perkins + Will, GAI Consultants, Kittleson Associates, Littlejohn, Compspring, Modica & Associates, and Consensus Communications, Inc. for the efforts in creating the vision of the District.
