Making An Impact

Giving generously in these challenging economic times is important because giving does make a difference. At Dr. Phillips Charities measuring the impact of our giving helps us evaluate whether we are effectively honoring the Phillips’ family legacy of “helping people help themselves”.

Major Gifts

Dr. Phillips Charities has invested more than $170 million in grants, pledges and program related investments to worthy nonprofit organizations. A significant portion of these dollars has been major gifts to construct facilities or launch significant programmatic initiatives, many of which preserve the Phillips family legacy by carrying the Dr. Phillips name in perpetuity.  Read more about Major Gifts awarded by Dr. Phillips Charities in the Major Gifts section.

Grant Highlights

In Central Florida, we are fortunate to have an energetic, efficient and effective nonprofit network, with remarkable leaders, staff and volunteers, to support charitable needs. Dr. Phillips Charities has been a leader in shaping the nonprofit sector by designing innovative programs to solve community problems, investing in state-of-the-art facilities and equipment and granting funds to expand services to meet the needs of a growing central Florida population. To illustrate the extent of the impact of recent grants made, brief descriptions of the grants of $15,000 or more made in the last three years in each of our five areas of interest (Children and Youth Services, Cultural Programs, Educational Programs, Health and Rehabilitative Programs and Social Services) are included as grant highlights.  Read more about recent grants made in the five areas of interest in the sections for Children and Youth Services, Cultural Programs, Educational Programs, Health and Rehabilitative Programs and Social Services.

Our Community

Dr. Phillips Charities has an ongoing commitment to support organizations in the Dr. Phillips community located in southwest Orange County where the Phillips family had substantial investments during their life time.  The vision, time and effort of Dr. Philip Phillips and his son Howard resulted in the Dr. Phillips community being the first master-planned community in central Florida.  The master plan identified sites for schools, and Dr. Phillips Charities made the land available at below market price for the location of Dr. Phillips and Bay Meadows Elementary Schools, Southwest Middle School and a portion of Dr. Phillips High School.  Dr. Phillips Charities also constructed Dr. Phillips Elementary School to the specifications of the Orange County Public School System (OCPS) before the State of Florida agreed that population density in the area validated the need for a school, leasing it back to OCPS until the State of Florida gave authorization to use tax dollars to purchase it.

The master plan also provided for other public facilities, medical facilities, and parks and recreational amenities.  Dr. Phillips Charities constructed and/or provided land for many of these community assets.  Examples of the investment by Dr. Phillips Charities in the community are the Dr. Phillips Fire Station, the Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA Family Center, the Dr. Phillips Little League, the Dr. P. Phillips Community Park, the Southwest Library and the construction of our new headquarters at 7400 Dr. Phillips Boulevard.  Read more about the Dr. Phillips community in the Our Community section.
